This piece of jewellery from the Viking Era features a depiction of a thin
wriggling creature, whose ribbon-like shape has coiled into an intricate
pattern. The edge is adorned with four animal heads looking inwards. Animals
were not always depicted naturally: on the contrary, the imagination was
allowed to roam free. Animals became creatures of the imagination. The centre
of this handsome piece of jewellery features St. John’s Arms, which was
considered a symbol that protected from evil.
